LT Studio are working with the London Community Land Trust on two very exciting and innovative projects in London. The site at Susan Road is split across the road and the landscape has been designed to reflect the unique assets of each site in order to provide thoughtful, high quality spaces for future residents and improve the local area.
The landscape proposals for Susan Road are community-driven, creating high quality spaces for future residents while enhancing the local area. The site is split in two across Susan Road, with the ‘Garage site’ to the east and ‘Backland’ site to the west. The plans reflect the unique assets of each development area, while keeping a sense of continuity across the two sites.
The Garages site is car free, with 1no. roadside accessible parking space. Weatherproof storage is provided for 2no. bikes per dwelling, with additional short stay visitor bike parking. Where possible, these bike stores are located within rear gardens with rear access gates. Covered bin storage is provided. All existing trees on site are to be retained, with the addition of a central street-facing Ginkgo biloba ‘Maidenhair’ tree.
The built form of the Garages site creates an opportunity for a semi-private courtyard space for future residents. Ample low-maintenance planting is wrapped around the boundary line, creating a green ‘buffer’. Two boulders at each corner indicate a clear boundary alongside a distinct paving change. A low brick planter to the south boundary will enhance the existing footpath and deterring loitering. The Backland site is more private in character, due to the narrow access road and extensive tree cover. Maintaining vehicle access to the rear gardens of neighbours on the adjacent street, Dulme Crescent, was identified through community engagement sessions.
Though relatively small landscape areas, these proposals will be working hard to provide safe, calming and practical spaces for all future residents and local people.
