Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

Client: Historic England

  • Location: Ditherington, Shropshire
  • Architect: FCB Studios
  • Landscape Architect: LT Studio
  • Status: Completed

This project involved the regeneration of the oldest iron-framed building in the world and has been reimagined to include the Flaxmill Museum and Visitor Centre.

LT Studio has been privileged to be part of the redevelopment of the mill and to have provided landscape design consultancy for the external spaces at Shrewsbury Flax Mill Museum and Visitor Centre. This landmark heritage project involves the regeneration of the mill which is part of an outstanding group of historic buildings in this part of Shropshire.

The aim of the project was to work with client Historic England, the local community and other key stakeholders to develop a vibrant centre for living, working, social enterprise and leisure. Ideas for the external spaces include community growing projects, Makers clubs, ‘Flax to Fabric’ project workshops and heritage open days.

The completed project provides spaces and places which are vibrant, inclusive, safe and centered on people rather than vehicles. The flexible use of planting allows this space to be transformed into a green space in line with any future programme for the mill. The planters can easily be moved to other parts of the terrace and are also flexible enough to allow for a variety of plant species to be introduced at different times of the year.
