LT Studio is currently providing landscape design services for a community cohousing project in Dorset. This exciting, exemplar scheme will create a neighbourhood which offers an affordable, sustainable, mutually supportive community to local people, and which provides benefits and facilities for the wider locality. The development will offer 30 homes from one bed apartments to four bed family homes with a high level of sustainability. These new homes for local people will be offered 40% as shared ownership or affordable rental arrangements by a housing association.
The site will feature a common house offering a range of facilities for cohousing residents and the wider locality. Landscape has been a key consideration for the scheme, with the provision of a two acre community planting space using organic and permaculture methods and an outdoor amphitheatre. The landscape will also feature water storage systems, including drainage swales, rain gardens and reed beds, interactive water play, yoga deck and cider orchards. This project required extensive stakeholder engagement with all members of the residents association and the wider community.
Robert Gould, the leader of West Dorset District Council, said of our design:
“This is an exciting project … it will be an amazing place to live … it will be a leading national example of cohousing.’
