LT Studio was invited to submit proposals at concept stage for improvements to Widcombe Junior School. The external spaces have been designed to complement a new much-needed school hall.
The new scheme options are truly landscape-led; our aspirations for the extension to Widcombe Junior School are to provide a series of inspiring and imaginative new spaces without compromising the existing outdoor provision.
The design will maximise the site location and will offer interactive opportunities for the children to explore, touch and experience. The surrounding landscape will be developed into an area of learning and play through discovery. The proposed landscape will improve wildlife habitats, adding edible gardens, opportunities to grow fruit and vegetables and provide green infrastructure. The spaces could include habitat walls made up of a range of reclaimed materials, designed to promote biodiversity by providing planting pockets, nesting boxes and bug habitats. Rainwater collection could be used to create wildlife ponds simultaneously reducing the amount of water leaving the site.
These new spaces also incorporate a woodland copse which allow for Forest Schooling – an innovative and inspirational approach to outdoor play and learning. Other playful features include a treetop lookout station and a climbing wall.
